Emergency delegation to Gaza: NLG to Lead Fact-Finding Legal Delegation to Gaza

Israel’s recent invasion of the Gaza Strip has killed over 1300 Gazans and wounded over 5000. Reports have emerged of Israeli forces bulldozing homes, firing on ambulances, and shelling United Nations sites in addition to mosques, schools and other civilian structures.

The delegation will be in Gaza for approximately 7-9 days. Delegates should prepare to leave the US between approximately January 29-31 and return February 8-11.

MISSION & TASKS

The Mission of this delegation will be to investigate and gather evidence of possible Israeli war crimes and human rights violations in Gaza.

Delegates will conduct a fact-finding mission into Israel’s potential violations of international law in Gaza, interviewing Gazan lawyers, journalists and medical personnel. The delegation will consult with the Palestinian Center for Human Rights and the Al-Mezan Centre in gathering evidence and taking affidavits.

DELEGATES

Delegates will be chosen on the basis of (in no order): (1) relevant legal expertise; (2) policy experience; (3) media skills; (4) knowledge of the region and/or experience working in the region; and (5) experience in conflict zones. There is a particular need for maritime lawyers and international law experts.

LOGISTICS

We will be in Gaza for approximately 7-9 days. Delegates should prepare to leave the US between approximately January 29-31 and return February 8-11.

For those who cannot make it on a short notice, we are planning a follow-up delegation later in the spring. Please only send an application if you can be in Gaza from approximately January 29-31 through February 8-11.

Getting into Gaza is difficult. We will discuss travel from the US to Gaza as the delegation is formed.

REPORTING TO THE WORLD

Delegates must commit to documenting and publicizing their findings upon returning from Gaza. In addition to writing a report, post-delegation follow-up work may include giving talks, writing articles, talking to the media and lobbying Congress.
