On Friday September 8th, the National Lawyers Guild was honored to be joined by two former political prisoners from the Black Panther Movement & organizers of the Spirit of Mandela campaign, which is bringing international attention to U.S. human rights violations of Black, Brown, Indigenous People, and U.S.-held political prisoners.  The conversation was moderated by NLG President Suzanne Adely and interim Executive Director JML Santiago.

Jalil Muntaqim

Released from prison to parole on 10/6/2020, after being confined for almost 5 decades, Jalil is a veteran member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, & the co-founder of the National Jericho Movement to Free All Political Prisoners. Jalil is the author of “We Are Our Own Liberators”, “Escaping the Prism – Fade to Black” and his essays have been published in several books, magazines and newspapers. Presently, he works as the Special Projects Coordinator for Citizen Action of New York, in Rochester, New York. Jalil is organizing on behalf of the 13th Forward campaign to end penal slavery in New York State.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

In January of 2019 the Campaign began the International Tribunal on US Human Rights Abuses Against Black, Brown, and Indigenous Peoples which brought five charges of genocide against the u.s., specifically: 1. Police Racism and Violence 2. Hyper-incarceration 3. Political Prisoners/Prisoners of War (PP/POW) 4. Environmental Racism 5. Public Health Inequities. The Final Verdict recognizes all of these charges as being relentlessly committed against Black, Brown and Indigenous people.
