August 2: Political, legal, and human rights crises in El Salvador – Online and in-person planning meeting

Please join us for a conversation on Friday, August 2 at 1 pm PT (4 pm ET) with Ivania Cruz, an attorney and human rights defender from El Salvador. Ivania works with the Human and Community Rights Project (Unidad de Defensa de Derechos Humanos y Comunitarios, UNIDEHC), which represents communities confronting illegal displacement and victims of political persecution and unjust detention. She also the spokesperson for the Committee of Family Members of Political Prisoners of El Salvador (COFAPPES) which she helped form in 2021 after her brother, a physician who worked on the Zacatecoluca city council, was unjustly arrested. Earlier this year, she went public with evidence that she is being surveilled by police and was joined by other human rights defenders whose are facing similar threats for their work.

Ivania will share a short overview of the political, legal, and human rights crises, in El Salvador, including the suspension of constitutional rights under the ongoing (and illegal) State of Exception as well as the resurgence of political persecution against community leaders, land defenders, and members of the political opposition. We hope there will be plenty of time for questions and a discussion regarding possibilities for international legal support and solidarity.
