As the supply chains and consumer networks of late capitalism are ever more transnational in character, the idea of the “workshop floor” as the locus of organizing for better wages and improved working conditions has become more abstract. This panel will bring together two of the 2015 Antipode Scholar-Activist winners and two labor movement activist-lawyers to explore the successes and challenges of contemporary global labor activism.

Panelists:

Ashwini Sukthankar – Director of Global Campaigns, UNITE HERE

Suzanne Adely – Global labor and human rights lawyer with a background in community organizing

Emma Saunders – Human Geography PhD student at University of Edinburgh

Jamie McCallum – Assistant Professor of Sociology at Middlebury College and a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment at UC Berkeley
